Homeless man in downtown Chicago

I gave this guy my last dollar, and then he had the nerve to tell me that what he really needed was three dollars. I was quite irritated, but at least I got this picture of him heckling passers-by. I think it was a group of attractive black girls.

Later that day, when I tried to board the subway, my transit card was short 25 cents. I had zero cash. Embarrassed, I asked a woman if she could spare a quarter. She didn’t have any change, so she handed me a dollar bill and said, “Here, just take this.”

I guess I broke even.

That makes me think of the time, shortly after I’d moved to San Diego, when I used to work downtown at The Broadway (before it was Macy’s). There was a homeless man who asked me for change and all I had was my bus fare and some chocolate chip cookies I’d made for a work potluck. I gave the man the plate of cookies and as I walked away, he told me that he didn’t need fu**ing cookies. What he fu**ing needed was some fu**ing money.
    He kept the cookies.
