Martin Luther King is my hero. You could say I heart MLK, or MLK is my homeboy.
San Diego’s annual MLK parade was Saturday, so I trollied over to Petco Park to take some pictures.
I had a great time, sucking up the sunshine and the joy of the spectators. Black folks can rally a crowd and celebrate an occasion like no one else. I met enthused families in big groups, many with lawn chairs and small kids. White people, too!
It made me happy to see thousands of people celebrate the legacy of one man, a man who — for good reason — saturates the American history book.
Yesterday, while driving to North Park Produce, I witnessed a black man watering his front lawn. He stopped for a moment to let a white man pass through. The men exchanged smiles and hellos. How small, how completely uneventful — and yet, how wonderful! A fleeting moment passed without fanfare, as it should have, but inside that moment was a bundle of circumstances that simply could not exist 40 years ago.
It was a mountain of struggle that got us here. Martin Luther King is still the voice and the face of it.
