Andrew, Today I read the obit in the Ridgewood News which I read on-line for your Grandfather Charlie's passing. How sad I am to learn of Charlie's death. My name is Robert O'Connor, Jr. My father was Bob O'Connor,Sr. M.D., FACS, FACC, Dean of the New York Medical College, Prof. of Medicine, Member of the team that invented the Artificial Teflon Coated Mitral Heart Valve (1966-67) and above all...Charlie's best friend.
Dad died of liver cancer on at 52 yrs. March 13, 1968 (I was one month shy of my 13th birthday) and Charlie's life was never the same. My mother, Virginia O'Connor was very close to Charlie and Beverly (Charlie's first wife) and passed away to a massive MI 5 years after dad, also at 52 yrs., on December 7, 1973. It was Charlie's voice on the phone to me at 3:00am, 600 miles away from Ridgewood, at St. Bonaventure University in upstate NY informing me that "she's gone, Robbie."
I read some of your articles, and relished the photographs, and it's now 12:54am EST and I'm wiping tears as I try to compose a letter of sympathy and condolence to you and your family, but it's getting late and I've toasted one-too-many to Charlie and will sign off soon, but I have to start a dialog with you now so I can sleep better.
I've been cursed and blessed with an extraordinary memory and wish to share some early famliy history with you and your family about Charlie and my dad.
I recently found Charlie and Nancy through my best friend, Ralph Michael Esposito who was best friends growing up in Saddle River, N.J. with your late Uncle, David Hollander.
In one of our conversations Charlie, with a weeping candor, told me that my dad was the best friend he ever had, next to Nancy, and his life was forever changed when my father died.
Needless to say but I pass on my deepest sympathies to your grandmother and remaining family members and look forward with hopeful enthusiasum to continuing our conversation/dialog.
I can be reached by:

If you can, picture Charlie and dad as the "Mad Men" of medicine in Ridgewood...lots of Scotch and Benson & Hedges "shorties", with their Bbrooks Brothers suits and Cadilacs.
Everyday I miss my parents...something in the day will always trigger a memory and while 99% of the time it puts a smile on my face, sometimes it just makes me cry like a baby. Charlie was a really "good shit" to quote my dad-- he will never be forgotten by me and my famliy.
Yours most truly and sincerely,
Bob O'Connor,Jr.
