Dear Nonie, Andrew and David,

I am very sorry to hear of the death of your father. My family told me what happened to him and it makes me very sad. I'm sorry he had to leave you, but he's in heaven now so he's going to be alright. He's very lucky to have such a great family. I will pray for you.

Lindley

Andrew,
I'm studying here in Denmark and I just heard about your father. He was a great man and I wish the world was filled with more people like him. Your father's death particularly saddens me because I am so far from home and it reminds me of the mortality of my own loved ones. I wish I could be back home to pay my respects to your father. Take care of yourself. I'll be thinking of Rich....

Nancy, Andrew, David
tuseday, i got the news, and i just couldnt believe it. im so sorry. You all have played a big role in my life. Ever since ive meet you, ive been blessed with a great group of people. You have influenced me in so many ways. Rich was allways around when it came to running, and he helped stregthen my running career and kept me motivated. He was such a great guy besides as a coach. He took me to mammoth for my very first time, and it was a great trip. just us boys, david andrew rich and me. and lets not forget all his tips to me and david for trying to meet girls... andrew, you have allways helped me when i needed help with computers, video editing and technology in general. i thank you so much for helping me grow in my love for technology. david you have been my good friend since freshmen year, a great team mate, and a brother. Thanks for allways giving me rides when i couldnt drive, thanks for all the snowboarding memories, thanks for letting me spend the night and the spa sessions and for everything. Nancy, you are one of the sweetest mothers i have ever meet. im so glad i got to know you more than just as david's mom. we've had so many great conversations, and i'd like to keep having them. you've done a lot for me, letting me sleep over, giving me pain killers before a race, taking us up to big bear, morning breakfast after saturday morning runs, and the list goes on. you are all such great poeple and im so sorry rich had to go. But i know you will live strong and that andrew and dave will carry on the legacy of rich and the Phelps family. Rich meant a lot to me and still means a lot to me as do you andrew, david and nancy. Rich's passing is a great loss. We will all miss him. He will allways be loved and respected by everyone he has come in contact with him. i admire you the phelps family. live strong.
thanks for making the best 4 years of my life (highschool) even better. and thank you rich for being an incredible mentor. if you need anything, dont hesitate to ask, i will always be here for you guys.
love

Nancy, Andrew, and David ...
I'm at a loss as what to say without saying the standard and insincere. You are all in our prayers, and thoughts.
I don't know where to start. Everything comes pouring in. I remember Nancy's stories of how they met in college, and their first apartment in San Diego. Lara, Stephen and I remember the plans for the pool. And, just the amount of time Rich spent on making everything perfect ... each plant, each step had to be just right. I also remember "Uncle" David, and how much time Rich spent with him when he lived in California. And, the time Rich and I spend talking about David settling into California. Stephen remembers him and "Uncle" David tormenting Rich with making a mess on the floor, and him hurry to clean it up.
All of our love and prayers go out to everyone that knew Rich, and his family.

Andrew,
I know that we haven't spoken much in the past, but I still stop by your site from time to time to see what you're up to. What a shock to discover tonight.
I'm sure that the words probably sound tired and almost insincere by now, but I am so, so sorry to hear of your loss. Both you and your family are in my thoughts. If you need anything, please let me know.
Much love to you.

Dear Phelps family,
We are all so sad to have learned that your dad and husband lost his battle to cancer. David always had optimistic things to say about his dad's battle, and we too truely believed he would win too. David wanted his hero to come home and we too never thought this would not occur. Liz talked about ski trips everyone would take this winter again and related how active the Phelp's family was. She spoke of the last run the family took together to the special place Rick liked to run at. Life sometimes doesn't seem fair for someone so good to be taken at the acme of his life when his children are just starting to blossom into the men they will become. Dave's dad was a good man, and I know this because his spirit is reflected in his son and will continue to shine there. May you find peace in your loss.
Respectfully,
Tom,Mary,Liz and Pat Bernard

Dear Nonie, Andrew and David,
I am very sorry to hear of the death of your father. My family told me what happened to him and it makes me very sad. I'm sorry he had to leave you, but he's in heaven now so he's going to be alright. He's very lucky to have such a great family. I will pray for you.

Dear Nonie, Andrew and David: Jamie, Keith and I are so sorry to hear of your sudden loss.
I can still remember what a good sport your dad was when he came to New Jersey to visit us. You guys weren't born yet; David and I were going to see Jamie and Keith play Little League sports. The only people who go to see Little League sports are the parents and grandparents. However, your father spent the majority of his weekend watching baseball in the cold cold spring weather New Jersey is famous for. We were all impressed that he showed such caring and interest.
Years later when David was living in California, I returned a telephone call to David. I didn't get to talk with David but reached your father on the phone. He was so kind to lend David his phone at a time when times were difficult for David. It had been many years since I had spoken to your father but his kind and caring voice gave me hope with the difficult situation we were living with. He told me he was David's friend. That statement brought me alot of comfort at the time.
We are truly sorry and our prayers are with you and your family.

To the Phelps' Family... from David's RBV XC teammate Kerstin, from Team Mom Lorie and from Casual Team Photographer John, all three Gubas send our condolences to you. We knew Rich from the ole' Road Runner days when he was always there to willingly help out, run with the kids, help with minor injuries, and most importantly to give his support and encouragement to the young athletes (and parents) which was a skill that he was so wonderful at doing. I was always in awe at how much unconditional support he gave to the young Road Runners, many of whom he didn't really know. But, that was Rich... always, always unselfishly helping the kids. Rich will live on forever in your family but also in all of the runners' lives whom he has touched. He was truly an inspirational human and one whose path I am grateful crossed ours.
